Fatimah Chik

"... It started in 1975 when I did a research on South East Asian textiles. I was inspired by the traditional textile motifs and the arts and crafts of the region. They are of the Dayak, the Batak, the Sumbanese, Celebes and the Malays. Such motifs as these are commonly found in the traditional textiles of the region such as the Pua, Batik, songket and the cindai. They are also found in the Malay decorative silver wares, wood carvings and the shadow play that particularly serves as a symbol of life.

... These motifs like signs and symbols have their own philosophical and symbolical meanings of the world we live in. If the shadow play serves as a symbol of life, the bamboo shoot (puchuk rebong) relates to the Malay literature and proverb signifying the importance of education at an early age.

This is evident in 'Melody Nusantara' where I have introduced a tie-dyed background. The motifs of the bamboo shoot (puchuk rebong) repeated across the lower part paints an early part of life - the importance of education, which is the gateway to a bright future. The circular floral motifs (from the silver wares) melodiously bursting and rotating above signifies the achievement and success which is then strengthened by the triangular collaged borders on both sides of the circle.

This is followed by 'Unity In Harmony' - this depicts the way of life of the peoples of the region. The textured background of blues and reds results in an indigo landscape of the Iban Pua. The shrimp motifs of the Sumbanese are printed separately, cut into various triangular sizes are collaged on to the indigo background creating a harmonious unity.Said this Malaysia famous artist, Ms. Fatimah Chik.
