Synopsis

Inspired by a deep love for Batik art, a teacher and student have come together to hold a unique exhibition of batiks encompassing the traditional and innovative.

Fatimah Chik, a second generation of Malaysian painter, is known as the most productive contemporary artist who employs age-old traditional metal blocks to various Southeast Asian motifs onto textiles. Her abstract, complex waxing and dyeing processes, coupled with meticulous hand-painted finishing, have evolved into a unique style of her own.

‘Art is an expression of your own vision and eventually you will make up your own rules’ is the motto of the young batik artist Emilia Tan. Drawing inspiration from everywhere, heavily influenced by Australian aboriginal art, her innovative works of realism and abstraction are intuitive and spontaneous. Painted in multiple layers directly from her heart, her art also exudes a sense of depth and mystery.
