Professional Custom Picture Framing Facts
Moulding |
Moulding is what we call the "frame". Hand carved picture frames, gold picture frames and metal picture frames are among the thousands of different frame styles we offer. Apart from custom framing flat artwork, mouldings can also be used for three-dimensional objects such as collectibles & memorabilia. The moulding enhances the art's character and should reflect the style and period of the art. |
Matting |
Matting is the term used to the process of cutting and placing a piece of mat board, with a window opening cut, over or around artwork. The mat serves two functions: It protects the artwork by separating it from the glazing (or the glass) and providing air circulation; and it enhances the artwork it surrounds. Matting comes in a variety of colors and is chosen to complement the color and design of the artwork. It makes the overall size of the finished piece larger. Using quality materials for matting will offer protection, ensuring that your art will last for years to come. |
Glazing |
Glazing is a general term used to describe the transparent material covering the artwork as a means of protection, such a glass. There are many variations including regular clear picture glass, anti-reflective (chemically coated to reduce reflection), non-glare (acid etched to help reduce glare), and conservation glass (specially formulated to help filter the damaging effects of UV light). |
Mounting |
The mounting board sits behind the artwork. It must be of the highest quality to ensure longevity of the artwork. There are many methods of mounting, including dry mounting, wet mounting, spray mounting, vacuum mounting, lacing, stretching, stapling and hinging. It is important to choose the proper method to preserve the value of the items being mounted. |
Conservation/ |
Conservation framing is preparing an item for display in a manner that preserves the item, keeping it as unaltered as possible while protecting it from degradation. Ideally, anything done to a piece of artwork should be completely reversible, allowing the artwork to return to it's original condition as is it had never been framed. |

How to Take Care Your Art Work
Wondering how you could protect the beautiful oil painting you received as a birthday gift. While Malaysia is a great place to live, when it comes to displaying art, it is often challenging. Even with proper framing, environmental conditions such as strong sunlight and hot temperature can damage works of art over the years. To avoid this, we recommend the following tips:
1. Art created with ink, pencil, pastels, charcoal or watercolor should be framed under glass. These mediums are very delicate and must be handled with extreme care. Framing under glass as soon as possible is recommended to protect the easily damaged surface. Full sun can fade the colors but they can survive strong light or indirect sunlight. Never touch the surface of the art or place anything on its surface to avoid smearing.
2. Art created with oil or acrylic should not be framed under glass, as these have to “breath”. Direct sunlight will fade oils or acrylics over time. Make sure to dust frequently as build up may crack and peel the paint. Never spray commercial cleaners on your painting. Should the colors appear dull after awhile, you can have your painting varnished at your art store to renew the colors and protect the surface from possible cracking. Transport your painting carefully wrapped in cardboard and protected with bubble wrap. Avoid leaving the artwork too long in the packaging as moisture may form and damage your painting.
3. Careful planning of where you’ll hang your artwork should lengthen its lifespan considerably. Frames should be hung with the use of picture hooks. Hanging a picture from a nail allows the frame to more easily shift from level and increases the danger of the frame being knocked off the wall. When hanging frames on brick walls, the use of special screws or hangers may be required. Do not hang art near kitchen or other heat sources.
4. Humidity, extreme fluctuating temperatures, direct sunlight and bright light can damage your previous art. Avoid contact with fluorescent lighting that emits harmful high-energy rays that can deteriorate the artwork.
5. Dust frames regularly and inspect for signs of mold or insects. Make sure that all hangers and items used to secure the frame are still in good condition. Never use commercial products to clean your bare artwork. Use a feather duster to dislodge dust particles from the surface. To clean the picture glass that protects your artwork, never spray cleaner directly onto the glass. Instead, spray on your cleaning cloth and then wipe the glass to avoid cleaner from running gown and seeping between the glass and frame and damaging the art. Use a cleaner specifically designed for Plexiglas or or use a soft damp cloth and spot clean gently to avoid scratching.
