Synopsis:

Shibori is a Japanese term for several methods of dyeing cloth with a pattern by binding, stitching, folding,
twisting or compressing. So, it cannot be produced by machinery. Some of these methods are known in
the West as tie-dye.

The Special characteristic of shibori resist is a soft or blurry edge pattern. The effect is quite different from
the sharpe-edge resist obtained with stencil, paste, and wax. The firingprocess in the kiln is an important
aspect of shibori textile. All technical conditions may have to be met but a miracle or equally a disaster may
happen in the kiln. Chances and accidents may aslo give life to the shibori process and this is its special
magic and strongest appeal.

Shibori Textile show will be exhibited by Fatimah Chik who is known as the most productive contemporary
artist who uses metal blocks to apply motifs from various Southeast Asian textiles. In her work, the quality
of batik as in processes and products is her main theme.

Fatimah Chik belongs to the second generation of Malaysian painter who utilizes batik as an art medium.
